Bishop Mariann
Edgar Budde
Spiritual Leader
ETHICAL LEADERSHIP AWARD
Mariann Edgar Budde is the bishop and spiritual leader of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington and Washington National Cathedral, the first woman to hold that position. Bishop Mariann relies on her faith to guide her in striving for peace and justice, as a fierce advocate and leader in support of racial equity, gun violence prevention, immigration reform, the full inclusion of LGBTQ+ persons, and the care of creation. At the recent post-inauguration prayer service at Washington National Cathedral, she pleaded from the pulpit directly to the president to “have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared right now.”

Ethical lawyering is founded on a fundamental principle of the Rule of Law: that clients have the right to counsel of their choice, that lawyers have the right to select clients that they will represent, and that lawyers will represent their clients without artificial restrictions within the bounds of ethical behavior. That ethical principle was challenged in 2025 by attacks that sought to place barriers on American law firms. We honor those law firms that were the subject of those restrictions and chose neither to concede nor negotiate, but instead to stand in opposition as a matter of ethical principle and in defense of the Rule of Law. We also honor those additional law firms that chose at their own peril to defend them. Ethical lawyering must take precedence over partisanship and political favor.

Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE) is a global nonprofit that challenges future leaders to recognize and confront their ethical responsibilities by examining the roles and behaviors of individual professionals in Germany and elsewhere between 1933 and 1945 as an initial framework for approaching ethical responsibility in the professions today.
At our annual Awards Dinner, we honor individuals, corporations, and FASPE alumni who have demonstrated the highest ethical standards in their fields.
