The twelve-day trip was only the beginning. My FASPE experience—the intensive dialogues and lifelong connections with ethically-minded peers—will stay with me throughout my legal career.
Rose Carmen Goldberg
2014 Law Fellow

In less than a decade, FASPE earned a reputation as a distinguished fellowship program in professional ethics for graduate students and early-career professionals.

Each year, FASPE awards 80-90 fellowships, which consist of a two-week study program in Germany and Poland. The cost of maintaining our programs is substantial:

    • All fellowships are provided at no expense to the fellows, ensuring that the most qualified candidates are chosen regardless of financial position and that the fellowship experience is not impacted by financial capacity.
    • The unique quality of the FASPE learning experience is predicated on site-specific learning that uses the power of place as a platform for examining contemporary ethics in the professions. In removing fellows from the comfort of their day-to-day lives and placing them at historical sites, FASPE challenges them to think critically and question their assumptions regarding professional ethics. This contributes to the intensity of the program and is central to the singularity of the FASPE experience.
    • FASPE insists on the highest quality of scholarship and teaching. We have a robust Academic Committee comprised of individuals representing all six of FASPE’s disciplines, ethicists and historians. Two faculty members from each discipline lead each fellowship program and are granted honoraria.
    • A fellowship does not end with the two-week study program. FASPE maintains a long-term relationship with its fellows, providing a forum for continued dialogue on ethical professional behavior as fellows progress in their careers. We also encourage fellows’ engagement in the public discourse on professional ethics through the authoring of articles and op-eds, participation on panels, etc., as a means to keep the conversation regarding professional ethics open, emboldening our fellows to speak out, behave ethically and encourage the same in their professional peers.

Private philanthropy plays a significant role in fulfilling FASPE’s mission to educate and challenge future leaders in the professions. Individual giving, corporate support and program grants all help to make FASPE possible, ensuring the continued growth and long-term sustainability of this vital educational program.
