By FASPE Chair David Goldman
I write each month about an issue of professional ethics (defined in FASPE’s particular manner). As we leave behind a particularly troubling year, I write with a simple plea for respect, curiosity, and individual agency: respect for expertise and for the truth; curiosity about new ideas, including ideas and opinions that may differ from our own; individual agency to act in favor of respect and curiosity, to act in opposition to those who seek to divide, to act to seek fair and ethical solutions.
The traditional notions of liberal democracy seem to be out of favor–maybe, though, this is a question of semantics. I hope that pluralism and truly curious inquiry are not out of favor. I hope that the willingness of respectful and curious people to take individual agency is not out of favor.
We must rely on our professionals. As professionals, we have the authority to influence; as professionals, we can have an impact.
"Considering Professional Ethics" is a monthly essay shared in the FASPE e-newsletter.
