The Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE) is a global nonprofit that challenges graduate students and future leaders to recognize and confront their ethical responsibilities by analyzing the decisions and actions of Nazi-era professionals. We honor individuals, corporations and FASPE alumni who have demonstrated the highest of ethical standards in their fields. The awards are presented at an annual dinner in New York and serve as our primary fundraiser.

Evan Gershkovich, Reporter
Paul Beckett, Assistant Editor
The Wall Street Journal

Award to be accepted by Paul Beckett

Evan Gershkovich is a dedicated journalist, like so many in his profession. They work under enormous pressure, even personal danger. Journalism and journalists are under attack for merely practicing their craft. In July, 2022, Evan wrote on Twitter: “Reporting on Russia is now also a regular practice of watching people you know get locked away for years.”  Evan symbolized that risk when he was arrested on March 29, 2023—for no other reason than his being a journalist. We honor Evan for his dedication to his profession.

Paul Beckett, a long time award-winning international and national journalist was dedicated to his craft, ultimately becoming the head of the Washington Bureau of the Wall Street Journal. His life then changed: from October, 2023, Paul worked full time to secure the release of Evan Gershkovich, leading the global public outrage at Evan’s brazen arrest and coordinating the efforts to obtain Evan’s release. We honor Paul for his commitment to Evan and to his committed passion to journalism and to the practice of unrestricted and responsible journalism everywhere.

Microsoft
CORPORATE HONOREE

Each year, FASPE recognizes a global corporation in a particularly relevant sector for exemplary ethical leadership. This year, we honor Microsoft as we recognize its pioneering efforts in research, development, and deployment of technological innovation. We note, in particular, Microsoft’s commitment to ethical AI development and initiatives, directed from the Microsoft leadership, like the Technology for Fundamental Rights Program and AI4Good Lab. Microsoft sets a standard for much needed ethical leadership as we contemplate our futures that will be so defined by technology.

Shekinah Elmore, MD, FASPE Medical '13
DISTINGUISHED FELLOW AWARD

Shekinah Elmore, MD (July 15, 1982 – July 24, 2024) is honored as this year's Distinguished Fellow at the 2024 Dinner and Awards for Ethical Leadership. Her distinguished career in radiation oncology was marked by her profound empathy and resilience. Shekinah faced her own multiple cancer diagnoses and, even while undergoing treatment, had the strength and fortitude to use her personal experiences to inform and enrich her patient care and teaching. Her unique intersectional perspective and dual roles as doctor and patient revealed her exceptional character, commitment to humanism in medicine, and ability to provide holistic care. Shekinah's significant contributions to her field and her enduring legacy exemplify ethical leadership. We celebrate Shekinah's life and work, which remain a beacon of inspiration for all.
